February is over and I’m glad. It wasn’t my favorite month. It will be lodged in my memory as the month of X, Y, and Z and I don’t refer to promotion, vitality, and lottery winnings. It did, however, have some wonderful days, such as the weekend at the L’Abri conference and days visiting our older son.
Fortunately, difficult days are not without their points of encouragement and the days of February were no exception. God Calling is a daily devotional book written I’m not sure when by two anonymous women who refer to themselves as “two listeners”. The back cover refers to it as “The Enduring Devotional classic” that has sold “millions of copies.” It’s not the Bible and doesn’t claim to be, but it does claim to be Christ’s daily messages to these two listeners. As A. J. Russell writes in the introduction, “Having read their book I believe them...I do not believe in the verbal inspiration of this or any book. But I do believe that these women have been led and that much of what is written is very clear leading indeed.” The couple paragraphs that are each day’s reading certainly have the ring of truth to them; they align with Scripture. They are reminders of what Scripture says and this past month those reminders have been potent.
Here is an abbreviated survey of the words that stood out to me in February’s readings. Maybe you will find something helpful in this I-hope-not-too-long list:
Feb. 1: “Take courage. Do not fear. Start a new life tomorrow...I give you a fresh start. Be not burdened. Be not anxious....Why do you fret and worry so?”
Feb. 2: “Do all you can and leave to Me the rest. Peace will come and trust. Fear not, I am your Advocate, your Mediator.”
Feb.3 : “Your faith and My power--the only two essentials. Nothing else is needed...Rely on Me.”
Feb. 4: “Just go step by step. My will shall be revealed as you go.”
Feb. 6: “The longing of the human heart to be loved for itself is a something caught from the Great Divine Heart. I bless you. Bow your head.”
Feb. 7: “Trust and be not afraid. Life is full of wonder...Only a few steps more and then My Power shall be seen and known. You are, yourselves, now walking in the tunnel-darkness. Soon you yourselves shall be lights to guide feet that are afraid.”
Feb. 8: “This is the great test. Am I your supply or not?...Possess your souls in patience and rejoice. You must wait until I show the way.”
Feb. 11: “There is no work in life so hard as waiting, and yet I say wait.”
Feb. 14: “The strengthening and curative powers of [renewing time with Me] you cannot know. Such knowledge is beyond human reckoning.”
Feb. 15: “You shall be used...Let inspiration take the place of aspiration.”
Feb. 16: “Be still, be calm. Wait before Me. Learn of Me, patience, humility, peace. When will you be absolutely unruffled whatever happens?”
Feb. 18: “So trust and be no more afraid than a child would be, who places its tangled skein of wool in the hands of a loving mother, and runs out to play, pleasing the mother more by its unquestioning confidence than if it went down on its knees and implored her help, which would pain her the rather, as it would imply she was not eager to help when help was needed.”
Feb. 19: “Do not forget to meet all your difficulties with love and laughter. Be assured that I am with you.”
Feb. 21: “You do not need to see far ahead. Just one step at a time with me.”
Feb. 22: “You must trust Me wholly. This lesson has to be learnt. You shall be helped, you shall be led, guided, continually.”
Feb. 23: “Never forget that real healing of body, mind, and Spirit comes from within, from the close loving contact of your spirit with My Spirit.”
Feb. 26: “Pray for more faith, as a thirsty man in a desert prays for rain, for water.”
Feb. 28: “Remember that from the point of view of the Great Worker, one poor tool, working all the time, but doing bad work, is of small value compared with the sharp, keen, perfect instrument used only a short time but which turns out perfect work.”
Onward to March, the month of springtime.
